CA NGSS Statewide Implementation Professional Learning #1 (Rollout #7)

The California NGSS Collaborative is ready to launch the first in a new series of virtual professional learning opportunities, Building Sensemaking Through Disciplinary Literacy.

Building Student Sensemaking Through Disciplinary Literacy is an online professional learning experience. It is designed to deepen your understanding and implementation of teaching practices to advance student science understanding in an extremely engaging way!

The learning sessions are divided into four science and literacy-specific strands. Each strand has an elementary or secondary focus, plus an option for your administrator to attend a strand of their choice to learn alongside teachers.

• Reading: How to Use Science Text
• Argumentation: Moving Beyond CER to Help Students Make Sense
• Discourse for Sensemaking in Science
• Use of Notebooks for Sense-Making in Science

For example, participants in each strand will engage with specific topics and strategies for planning and implementation. In addition, you will explore discussion and assessment of strategies. Most importantly, you will have vital sharing and collaboration time with colleagues.

To provide as much scheduling flexibility as possible, there are 3 VIRTUAL options to participate in January through March.  Subsequent follow-up meeting dates in March and April will collaboratively review plans and implementation online.  After that, tune-up sessions will be offered in July through September.
