Culturally Responsive Teaching

In recent months, I have participated in multiple professional learning opportunities offered through California State University, Long Beach. In particular, the most recent endeavor has been comprehensive work identifying culturally responsive pedagogies appropriate across all disciplines, with specific emphasis in science.

As educators, it is important we acknowledge and incorporate into our instruction the variety of cultures that have positively impacted science and engineering over time. It is a social imperative that we create ongoing opportunities for students to explore, discuss and reflect on the vast contributions from innovators that mirror the demographics of our classroom.

Thanks to my friend and EDU Consultant Annie Maben, she has compiled and shared an excellent resource of scientists, engineers, and inventor biographies you can access on Google. Over the course of the next couple weeks, I will share some activities you can easily incorporate into your instruction. These lesson ideas can complement the content to build a broader cultural awareness with your students.
